A-Z of musicians?

I've been asked to consider whether it's possible to provide an A-Z of musicians here at lyricless.com.

It's a good idea, but I think we would need the author of each track to be correct. Currently DCDayDreamer owns most of the tracks, and until the musician who created each track signs up at lyricless.com, DCDayDreamer will be listed as the author. I would then be able to sort the tracks alphabetically by the author name rather than the track title.

Another way to do it would be to have several different areas under Music. We could then have an area for each track created by a particular musician. This might work better than the current setup, but it could get quite lengthy as more people sign up.

Even with better organisation, there is always a danger of the site getting too big to navigate by conventional methods. In this situation the easiest way to find content will be via the search engine. Newest articles and comments are already accessible via the What's New page, so this is already covered.

What do you think would work? Can you think of any other way to do this?

Maybe it would be a good idea to add a different field for the song's author. I mean, with the current fields it's assumed that the post author is also the track author, but the current experience shows that this is not always true.

So just adding a single field to both the post creation form and the database would improve a lot the searchs and the classification.

Another useful field could be some kind of 'tags', defined by the user (like the tags that are used in sites like flickr.com and all the Web 2.0), so users could group the content by those tags.

Well, just a couple ideas. ;-)

Adding a new field for the track author would be fine if I didn't use Majestic CMS for other sites. It would only make sense in the context of lyricless.com, and even then I think it would be better for the track author to be the poster. Otherwise people might think it's OK to post other people's music without their consent. That is a road we probably don't want to go down.

Tags would help in other areas besides this, so that might be the best way to go.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

The recent home page changes include an A-Z of artists, so I think this is taken care of.
